-THEYYAM-
Kerala, often hailed as "God's Own Country," is not only known for its lush landscapes and backwaters but also for its rich cultural tapestry. Among the myriad cultural expressions, one art form stands out for its mystical allure and spiritual significance – Theyyam. This ancient ritualistic dance drama, deeply rooted in the folklore of northern Kerala, brings to life a mesmerizing tapestry of colours, rhythm, and divine tales.

Theyyam is not merely a performance; it's a sacred ritual, a communion between the earthly and the divine. Originating in the Malabar region predominantly in the North Malabar region (consisting of present-day Kasargod,Kannur Districts, Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad and Vadakara and Koyilandy Taluks of Kozhikode). A similar custom known as Bhuta Kola is followed in the Tulunad region of neighbouring Karnataka.
The performers wear elaborate and colourful costumes, often with intricate makeup and headdresses. The costumes are designed to represent various deities, spirits, and mythical characters.
There are numerous Theyyam characters, each representing different deities or ancestral spirits. Some common characters include Vishnumoorthi, Raktha Chamundi, Muchilottu Bhagavathi, and Kari Chamundi, among others.
Theyyam is not just a visual and performing art but also a cultural and religious expression deeply embedded in the traditions of northern Kerala. It provides a unique and immersive experience for those interested in exploring the rich cultural heritage of the region.
